The annual tradition of May Day returns and for many this means that unlike the previous eleven weeks of the semester, there is a justifiable cause for staying up all night. Tickets for a series of functions are covertly scurrying the streets of Cowley and whilst many sellers have already eliminated supplies due to the excess demand, OBscene are dispersing some last minute information in regards to this monumental occasion.

May Day holds traditions that can be traced back almost 500 years to the ceremonious choir performances upon the roofs of Magdalen College and in the centuries of latter, students would congregate beneath the bridge beside the college, orchestrating a convoy of Punts during the early hours of the morning whilst heavily intoxicated. Following several year upon year of drunken collisions and a vast amount of damage, the powers that be prevented Punting activities on the river amidst the festivities leading to the somewhat unceremonious tradition of hurling oneself off the top of the bridge.

Now for the fifth year running, Magdalen Bridge will be closed between the hours of 04:30 – 07:30 for vehicles and 05:30 – 06:30 for pedestrians. For those that have not already infiltrated the all-night balls within Oxford University territory or commandeered a vessel upon the Cherwell, a small number of tickets for entry to selected night’s remains. Here lies the belated, definitive guide:

The Alternative May Day Ball – O2 Academy

Eclectricity and Freerange present the ‘Alternative May Day Ball’ at the O2 Academy, in which one of line-ups of the year has been formed to celebrate the occasion, juxtaposing the traditional black-tie and banquet with Bass, beats and general bedlam. The line-up includes Plastician, Lee Mortimer and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs as well as an array of local and accomplished DJ’s including ELDOKO (Eclectricity) and the Get Your Geek On gang. Full details can be found by following the link bellow and tickets are still available through the ticket link.

‘Sex On The Beat’, May Day Party – Clems

Without fail, the shoebox known as Clems will be offering one of the few sanctuaries for May Day revellers to dance their heel bones off right through to the sunrise on the 1st May. Discussion on the cobbled streets of the city has proclaimed that the evening is sold out so unless you possess persistent, persuasive skills entry is unlikely. Although it can be suggested that as the night will be running from 22:00 it is likely that there will be a few victims that fall short of the proposed all-nighter so some tickets may arise on the door.

The Morning After The Night Before

Most food establishments in Oxford are running specialised morning breakfasts including a few who are running ‘Champagne Breakfasts’ such as The Grand Cafe. It provides a much needed reflection on the nights occurrences and even signifies the intentions of ‘powering through’ for many. It is almost certified however that every place in the city will be incredibly busy and many are even taking reservation in the lead up to Friday, therefore it may be worthwhile simply having a ‘survivors meal’ back in the comfort of your own home.

And then…

The festivities continue on Sunday afternoon to celebrate the lengthened weekend with the Simple & Slide collaboration for this years May Bank Holiday ‘Boat Party.’ ‘Captain’ James Weston and his crew set sail mid-afternoon on Sunday, embarking on a six-hour voyage of underground electronic music along the River Thames. Tickets are sold out but the organisers have shed a glimmer of hope for those still wishing to attend by suggesting that some may be made available on Sunday. In addition the residents at ‘Get Your Geek On’ will be throwing the official after party at Baby Simple from 9p.m.

For those who suffer from seasickness tendencies OBscene suggests sticking to dry land and heading to the O2 Academy where The Cheek will be headlining in Room 2 at 8p.m followed by Ash downstairs at 9p.m. Click here for further details of both.
